THE ASSIGINACK PUBLIC LIBRARY

There has been a library in Manitowaning in the township of Assiginack since the late 1890?s. It was originally the result of interested citizens and solely dependent on volunteers and donations. The library has been in several prominent locations over the years, including in the Museum, and currently resides in the Municipal building at 25 Spragge Street, its home since 1983. The first paid library position began in the mid 1950?s and the first council-appointed board appeared in 1961. The library has experienced many changes over the past 100 years of both its early informal beginnings and its current official presence. Technology, general progress and improved communications have expanded the library?s vision and value within the community by providing access to a world of information, education, culture and recreation. These advances and achievements are the results of visionary board members, supportive councils, dedicated staff and were made possible by the increasing patronage of the citizens of this community.
